Congrats! Last week we completed our quilt top. This week is dedicated to the back of the quilt. The backing will be made mostly of a grey fabric. Here it is with the other colors...

Now, if you really wanted to, you could just use this fabric and be done with it. Since this quilt is 35" square you really only need a yard and your backing is complete! But, how about spicing it up? I'm loving that more quilts are getting some excitement on their back sides. Sure, if you pick a contrasting color for your quilting stitches the back can be quite decorative. But maybe you want to give it a little something extra.

What to do? I thought about similar piecing like I did on the front but sized down. Triangles perhaps? Strips, chevron piecing? Unsure, I took to Pinterest for some (more) inspiration. Here's what I found:

These are pretty amazing, right? So I took to my scraps and this is what I came up with! I pieced together the Red/Orange/Yellow, the Blues, the Greens and the Purples to make long strips. Then I more or less cut my backing piece in thirds, with the center piece just slightly taller than the other two pieces.

Here's a closer look at the patchwork...

Next week we wrap everything up with quilting and binding!
